COTTON
Why Choose
Organic?
If you
haven't heard, pesticides are not good for you. Over 2
billion pounds of pesticides are used each year on just US
farms. Can you imagine the impact all over the world?
The problem is that it is steadily increasing and presents a
major problem to the balance of nature.
Not only do
pesticides get rid of unwanted insects and plants, it also
kills beneficial micro-organisms that replenish the earth
with much needed nutrients. When farm land loses
nutrients this way, they are then replenished by the use of
synthetic fertilizers. As immunities to the pesticides
build, more chemicals are added which will eventually leave
the land unable to grow anything.
Pesticides
not only get into the cotton fiber but also into our food.
During the ginning process, the cotton plant is separated
into different useful parts. Cottonseed oil can be
found in many snack foods. Cotton seeds are used for
feed in both the beef industry as well as the dairy
industry.
Conventional
processing of cotton textiles use chemicals that the World
Health Organization classifies as hazardous. The
wastewater then pollutes our ground water. Even after
washing our clothes, traces of chemicals remain in the
fabric. Some of these chemicals are stored in the
body, a process called bioaccumulation. These
chemicals attack and weaken our immune system.
...but there
is good news. Organic Farming. The philosophy is
to bring life to the soil and manage the balance of a
diverse ecosystem. By maintaining this worthwhile
balance, the plants grow stronger. Did you know
organic cotton fiber is stronger than convention cotton?
As consumers
we can help make a change for better quality in our lives by
the choices we make.
